The Dawn of French Onion Soup

French onion soup dates back to 18th-century France, where it was considered a humble dish made with ingredients accessible to even the poorest household—caramelized onions, beef broth, and day-old bread. Over time, it evolved into a comforting classic, especially cherished for its golden, bubbly layer of melted cheese atop crusty bread.

The dish made its way to America in the mid-20th century, gaining popularity during the wave of French culinary influence in the ‘60s, particularly with the rise of chefs like Julia Child, who wrote Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961).

Both upscale restaurants and home cooks embraced it for its rich flavor and rustic charm. Today, French onion soup is a staple in French-American bistros, where tradition meets a touch of modern elegance.

What Makes Our French Onion Soup So Special?

We craft our French onion soup with the same care and attention we give to everything on our menu.

First, we slowly caramelize sweet onions until they’re tender and deeply golden. Then, we build flavor layer by layer with a hearty, house-made broth and just the right amount of seasoning.

The finishing touch? A thick, crusty slice of baguette, toasted to perfection, resting on top of the soup and crowned with a generous blanket of melted Gruyère.

The result is savory, cheesy, and soul-warming—exactly the way a traditional French onion soup should be.

At F&B, we aim to capture the essence of French comfort food while adding a modern American twist. You’ll find that philosophy in every spoonful.
